With its innocent, wide-eyed expression and soft features, a young white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) melts the hearts of any who encounter it! The offspring of one of the most widely distributed, large animal species in Canada, the spotted, wobbly-legged fawn is typically born in the spring and is able to stand on its own within minutes of its birth. In its first days, the vulnerable fawn uses its colouring as camouflage to hide from predators while depending on its mother, the doe, for nourishment; it is this touching bond that is lovingly depicted on the reverse of the latest addition to the Royal Canadian Mint's Baby Animal series.
