The goose hunt has been an integral part of Aboriginal life for thousands of years. Every autumn and spring, communities located along migration paths would turn to the sky for this treasured food source that could provide as much as four months' supply for some coastal communities. Hunters would read the weather to anticipate the arrival of the geese, even watch the melting ice and exposed water to predict where the geese would land. The hunt often lasted for days and was a special time of sharing between generations, highlighted by rites of passage as young men hunted on their own for the first time.
