Lake Huron, bordered by the province of Ontario on its eastern shore and the state of Michigan on its western shore, is the second-largest of the five Great Lakes and the fifth-largest freshwater lake in the world. First Nations people, including the Hurons for whom the lake is named, have inhabited Lake Huron and its surrounding watershed for at least 2,000 to 3,000 years. The European 'discovery' of the lake was made by Samuel de Champlain in 1615, accompanied by Étienne Brulé and their First Nations guides.
