As the youngest member of Canada's famed Group of Seven, Franklin Carmichael (1890-1945) helped to define a new "Canadian" style of landscape art in the 1920s and '30s—one that conveyed a deep love for the natural beauty of the rugged Canadian landscape. On the 125th anniversary of Franklin Carmichael's birth, the Royal Canadian Mint celebrates this highly respected artist with a stunning coin set that faithfully reproduces one of the artists's famed paintings.

Born on May 4, 1890 in Orillia, Ont., Franklin Carmichael showed an affinity for art at a young age; in his teenage years, he honed his artistic skills while working as a carriage striper in his father's shop. After studying at the Ontario College of Art and the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp, Carmichael became a successful commercial artist. But his name is forever linked with the Group of Seven, who ignited a national art movement and an artistic interest in Canada's untamed landscapes.
