The ancient muskox has dwelled in the Canadian Arctic for tens of thousands of years. Uniquely adapted to its life on the tundra, this large relative of goats and sheep is truly unique. With its protective layers of wool and hair, its snow-adapted hooves, exceptional vision, and powerful sense of smell, the muskox can thrive in the High Arctic where thew sun does not rise for much of the year and temperatures often fall -40 degrees of Celsius.
Tough hunted by Europeans to near extinction in the nineteenth century, the species became protected in 1917 and has made a slow nut steady recovery across much of its range.
