90 Years of Remembrance
It was the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 when the Allies and Germany reached a ceasefire to end four years of unprecedented horror and destruction in the "war to end all wars."
Roughly three years prior to this historic turning point, a poem written by a Canadian Medical Officer serving in Flanders fields (Belgium) touched the world with its anguish and imagery. The poppy had long been known to flourish in the lime-rich soil of battlefields, but it was John McCrae's poem that transformed it into the symbol of remembrance that Canadians proudly wear every November.
Ninety years after the armistice of the First World War, the humble poppy endures as a powerful symbol to honour our veterans—past, present and future.
